Business & Baby on Board – the business mums bible

Giveaway Monday – Review of a product for mums in business

Baby and Business on Board is essentially a collection of short interviews with successful business women many of whom started their business while their children were young. Each interview highlights a different aspect of beginning and running a business and is capped off with a few bullet points to drive the information home.

Business and Baby on boardIt is very hard not to be inspired when reading about the successes of the amazing women featured in this book but it was equally so to read about their failures. I loved how candid many of the women were about the stumbling blocks they encountered and the way their business has affected their families. It is always nice to have a little reminder that everyone has to start somewhere and what better way to do it then in a compact, easy to read book.

It is clear that Johanna Baker Dowdell is an expert at providing critical information in small and digestible chunks and I would love to see a follow up to this book which provided a step by step outline of how to set-up and run a business with children underfoot, but in the mean time I can see myself coming back to dabble in this book from time to time in search of a little gem of inspiration.

  1. Small Folk says:

I will most definitely have to read this book. Its always good to see how other women run the ship.

  2. Amber says:

I think my biggest stumbling block has been acknowledgment from others (and myself) that just because l am “at home” doesn’t mean l am not “at work”

  3. Helle says:

I found that when I started working from home I was always thinking about the kid when I was working and thinking about working when I was spending time with the kid! Keep forgetting sometimes, so a book like this would be a great read!

  4. Cath says:

My biggest stumbling block was letting go of my need to work a certain number of hours in order to feel productive… coming out of a corporate background, I thought I HAD to work every available hour! I used to feel divided on school holidays or after school, because the real reason I was working from home was so I could spend more time with my son, and yet, I was often working. I’ve decided to be more realistic with my business goals and work fewer hours, and enjoy the flexibility. He will only be young for so long and I’m determined not to miss the fun!

  5. joanne says:

My biggest stumbling block would be the organic growth which happened so quickly. And also being able to juggle family and demands of work giving the right amount of time each deserves.

  6. Sounds like an awesome read. I remember staring my business with a newborn and rocking her to sleep in her bouncer while doing my work. Hard work but well worth it.

  7. Shirley Taylor says:

My biggest stumbling block so far was seperating the work from the home. For example the washing up or the laundry were just calling out and being a major cause of procrastination. Now I close the door to the office and it is a case of out of sight out of mind.

  8. Bernadette says:

Would be a very interesting read, especially the ups & downs they went through to surge forward in a career they love & believe in…..

  9. Nitty Brown says:

The biggest stumbling block that I have overcome in running my business is committing to so many projects and not being able to keep up. Now I make sure I schedule the projects in and put it on a to-do list and tick it off as I go.

  10. Ali Wightwick says:

One stumbling block was moving to the opposite end of the state then having children. So I had to start networking from scratch with a new baby. Found lots of help online which I could do while bub was asleep. It’s definitely hard running or starting a business with young children but I have become more organised since

  11. This book would be amazing to read as so many mums may feel like they can not be as successful as other mums (or this may just be me :) ). But this book with really inspire other mums to follow their dreams of running a successful business. Well done

  12. Natalie says:

My biggest stumbling block has been the classic lack of TIME! So many things to do to grow my business and yet all the while my days are still filled with my beautiful little boy and family!

  13. The biggest stumbling block within my own virtual business was moving with the growth and walking the talk of preaching to outsource. The initial aim of working from home was to be there for the family but the busier I became, the less I was available. I now have a team around me, a couple of VAs who assist me with my business admin and I can still be there for the family as well as enjoy continued business growth.
