Choosing your business name

Guest post by Meirav Dulberg, Webby Web Design

choosing your business nameChoosing a name for your business is one of the first things you must do and probably one of the most important decisions you will have to make. It is not an easy process as your business name is your first impression on your business as people will form an opinion based on your business name.

5 years ago as a new mum, when I decided to start a web design business working from home I had to face this task. I wanted the name to show who I am and I wanted people to remember the name as I was going to build my business on networking and word of mouth.

My daughter who was 2 at the time was obsessed with Fifi and The Flower tots. One of the characters, a wise spider was called Webby. That’s a clever name I thought so I decided to call my business Webby Web Design. It ticked all my requirements: easy to remember, friendly, different and appealing to my target market – Mumtrepreneurs.

5 years on and I’m very happy with the name I chose – people remember me and therefore find me easily and in fact, some call me Webby (as my name is hard to pronounce…)

I hope this will help you if you are facing this task….

Do you mind if I quote a couple of your posts as long as I provide credit
and sources back to your site? My blog is in the exact same area
of interest as yours and my visitors would really benefit from a lot of the information you present here.
Please let me know if this alright with you. Thank you!

Thanks ladies, it is great to get this feedback. Lea, I agree with Alli, it is never too late to re-name, many big companies go through this as well. You just need to do it in stages and make sure you cover all bases and explain to your customers. Also do it gradually so the 2 names overlap for a while. One of my clients is doing this now with her new website launch – changing the name as her target market changed a bit but left the logo the same so there is consistency. From Seaweed Sally (target market was mainly kinders) to Southern Oceans Education (to appeal to also primary & secondary schools). I can send you photos of her logo then & now so you can see how branding stays but only a name change. Hope this helps! Meirav

I envy you Meirav – it IS a clever name and leaves the potential client with a clear understanding of your services. Mine’s a bit trickier and I wish ( in hindsight :) i’d given it a bit more thought… :) x

Lea » Hi Lea, I agree with you – it is a great name! Very clear and catchy. As for your biz name, it’s never too late to change if you feel you need to, is it? Cheers! Alli x
